Peoria Street, South of 14th Place

Maxwell Street is a congregation of people. They buy fruits and vegetables for the week and save lots of money. Its unique, anybody who knows anything about sales can flourish here into something big. The University of Illinois's mission is to teach; not to buy land to kick people out.

Ed , shopper and community activist, from an interview July 1994

Instead of the big stores, people can get it a little cheaper here. The Maxwell Market is a tradition. People can be their own boss and wheel-and-deal one-to-one. It gives people respect and more control in their lives.

Carmelita, a vendor, from an interview July 1994

The Maxwell Street Market is a gift from God. Nowhere else have I seen a market of such size and cultural diversity and with such low fees. It helps us who are struggling.

Jose, a vendor, from a speech made at a meeting of the Maxwell Street Vendors Association, June 1994
