Culinary and Historic Tour of old Maxwell Street

This may be your last chance to see it before it disappears.

On Sunday, October 18, 1998 the Culinary Historians of Chicago, in cooperation with the Maxwell Street Historic Preservation Coalition, will conduct a tour of the old historic Maxwell Street Market area. The guide will be market historian and economist Steven Balkin of Roosevelt University. Historian Bruce Kraig, also of Roosevelt University, will comment on the history of the hot dog at it relates to Maxwell Street.

The tour will focus on the architectural, gastronomical, and anthropological aspects of the area. We will see what remains of the buildings and businesses, listen to some of Chicago's best Blues musicians, dine at Original Jim's Hot Dog Stand, and learn why this living museum needs to be saved.

We will meet at Original Jim's at the corner of Halsted and Maxwell Streets at 10:00AM. There is no charge for this event. Food is "dutch treat". The tour will end at approximately noon, in time to walk (or drive) east six blocks, to visit the new Maxwell Street Market for yet a couple of hours.
