Dear Mr. Broski:
I am writing to voice my support for Professor Steve Balkin ands the Maxwell Street Historic Preservation Coalition. We would like to save a portion of land slated for university expansion, in order to retain the history of Maxwell Street. Instead of having to read about Maxwell Street from a book, students would be able to visit a museum on the exact site.
As a BMI songwriter and music publisher, I visited Maxwell Street many times. To me, Maxwell street wasn't about the few musicians who made it big. It was a training ground for the lesser known musicians. You didn't need a band, a stage, or a booking agent. All you needed was an open guitar case and a need to be heard. On a Sunday morning there were dozens of musicians playing for tips.
You have the power to preserve a part of history. Please consider using the last remaining block and a half of Maxwell Street for three museums focusing on immigrant history. Once it's gone, it's gone, forever.
Yours very truly.
