Dear Sir;
I urge you to reconsider the university's decision to raze the remaining portions of the Maxwell Street Market.
Outside of Beale Street in Memphis, this is the only other internationally known open air Blues and Gospel venue of major importance left in the United States. From my teenage years on, I have read constant references to the Maxwell Street Market yet have never had the opportunity to visit the site. It is my hope the university will take a pro-active stance and become a partner in the preservation and revitalization of this area. The area is important as a music and sociological site to all Afro-Americans and to the world community of musicians who draw their inspiration from the major artist who honed their talents and performed at this locale. Please save the remaining portions of Maxwell St. for the cultural and sociological benefit to all Americans and music lovers the world over. Someday, when my son is old enough, I would like to bring him to Chicago to see the cradle of electric blues and rock music. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ben Walters
