Dear Chancellor,
I graduated from Circle Campus in 1972. I am now a practicing dentist in a suburb of Boston. I understand the importance of a growing and vibrant university, but there is only one Maxwell Street in the world. So many things in our country are recreations of other places and times. Speaking with friends from other countries, often a discussion ensues concerning what comprises American culture -- obviously many things. Maxwell Street is a unique slice of, not only America, but most importantly Chicago. It is a vital part of what makes Chicago different from all other cities in the world. Most important, though, is its legacy of something that is truly American, the blues.
Please do not destroy this area. Once it is gone, it will be lost forever. Chicago will lose a treasure, our culture will lose a treasure. Chicago blues holds a special place in the music of the world. The city and its style of blues are known around the world. There is only one Chicago and there is only one Maxwell Street. Do not allow Maxwell Street to end up in some theme/amusement park as an a attraction next to the "Old West." Thank you for your time.
