I have been reading over recent months of a proposal by UIC to redevelop the Maxwell Street area. Although Chicago has many claims to fame (and notoriety), the blues music which originated in the city must be one of its greatest exports, and certainly the one with the most goodwill. All over the world the name of Chicago conjures up its music, which should be a great source of pride to its citizens. Nowhere has more historic connection with this music than Maxwell St, which has featured in so many magazine articles, books and record covers.
Why not preserve this site as a symbol of one of Chicago's greatest achievements? Develop it as a historic landmark? As a tribute to the artists so identified with the area, why not promote it as a tourist attraction for those interested in Chicago's culture, and a place of pilgrimage for Blues fans such as myself?
*Please don't let it be destroyed*.
