Dear Chancellor Broski,

It has come to our attention that there is a possibility for certain remaining portions of the famed Maxwell Street district to be incorporated into the University of Illinois' plans for commercial redevelopment.

As a group of blues music fans in nearby Northern Indiana, we ask you to try your hardest to keep as much as possible of this district whole, as an historic monument to the many bluesmen---and musicians of all types---who typified the growth of indigenous American folk music in this country and especially in the Chicago area.

Other monuments to this American art form have been largely reconstructed after the fact making many of them somewhat artificial. You can avoid such problems now by leaving as much of the original Maxwell Street district as possible, and thereby assuring the authenticity of the area for years and generations to come.

Thank you for your time. I hope you will consider our comments and the fact that we speak for so many blues devotees of the past, present, and --hopefully--the future.

Yours,

The Mojo Blues Society
