Dear Sir:

It is distressing to see yet one more respected university behaving more like a corporation, growing mindlessly, speculating in land development, devouring and reconfiguring property irregardless of its historical associations.

The property I'm specifically referring to is the Maxwell Street district which is one of the preeminent historical sites in the history of blues music. Destroying this priceless piece of history would like the Salzburg University tearing down the block where Mozart lived, simply because the "planners" there were either unappreciative or unfamiliar with classical music.

Of course, that would never happen in Europe. Tragically, it happens in America all to frequently. The University of Illinois should be having no part in it. It makes no sense now or in the future for either the University or the city of Chicago.

I urge you to put an end to any plans revolving around the destruction of the historic Maxwell Street area.

Sincerely,

Edward M. Cowardin, Jr.
