BLUES BENEFIT FOR JOHNNIE MAE DUNSON, Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998

A Blues Benefit for 77 year old Johnnie Mae Dunson will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 at The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, near Elston and North Avenue in the Bucktown neighborhood. Festivities will begin at 5PM.

The suggested minimum admission is $10.00, which gets you live blues and roots music, vegetarian chili, burgers, and brats. There will be a cash bar, a silent auction, and lots of interesting people around. The proceeds will benefit Johnnie Mae Dunson.

Bring your friends and get the word out. Hope to see you there!

We especially invite all those interested in the Preserve Maxwell Street movement.

Ms. Dunson got her start in the 1940s in the old Maxwell St. Market playing drums behind dancer Eddie "Pork Chop" Hines. Ms. Dunson wrote over 300 Blues songs, including the famous song, Boss Woman. She wrote music for Blues legend Jimmy Reed and played drums in his backup band.

Several top names in Chicago Blues will perform, including, if her health allows, Johnnie Mae Dunson herself.

All door/admission proceeds will be given to Ms. Dunson, who is recovering from a hospitalization due to a heart condition. The proceeds will be used so she can buy furniture for the apartment she was forced to move to, when she was evicted from her home this year; and for house repairs so, eventually, she can move back in her old house.
