A remembrance from Carolyn Jude Alexander

--written 11/13/99

I remember Willie James. He was like a brother and a father to me, and a friend, to me and the best blues singer I ever heard. And I don't care where he went, I always was there.

He has stuck be me, when my gas went out, he came over to the house and fixed my furnace and got me some heat.

He knew about furnaces because he worked for CHA fixing them.

I loved him with all my heart and soul.

I use to get up every morning and we was down there early in the morning. I would meet him down there. Sometime he would sleep all night down there in his car. He would get the blues together and I would get the drinks. We had a dam good time. And we made a lot of Maxwell Street money down there.

Maxwell Street was very good to me. A lot of times I didn't have food and if I could get bus fair to get to Jewtown, I could get something to eat. Someone would always feed me or give me free food or money. It was a lifesaver for me.

I thank God for Jewtown a lot of times. I thank god for Jew town.
