Bristol Farmers Market, England

From: Richard Counsell Richard@stokemanor.freeserve.co.uk>, Date: 5 Dec 1998

I am writing to tell you about a small farmers market in Bristol. We have been a bit slow on the uptake but Bristol now has a fantastic, bustling market with a strong percentage of the farmers being registered Organic. They must be encouraged and other towns could learn a lot from our town.

Stalls include Somerset Levels Organic Foods providing meat and vegetables from an Organic cooperative based on the Somerset Levels, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

This is a very new approach to farming practise in England and is of course very exciting.

As a country whose only culinary export would seem to be Macdonalds this novel approach to marketing rural products is in grave danger of catching on!!

Moscow, Idaho Farmers Market

From: Sheri Kopel-Hamburg <SOLSTICE@TurboNet.com>, Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998

Moscow Farmers Market: May till end of October (before the snow comes back!) Produce, arts, crafts, some services. Last sat in month handmade imports are allowed. Live music or theater performances each week. 8am-12 noon, set up can begin earlier and tear down usually starts at around noon, but can take longer if lots of shoppers. The market is run by the Moscow Arts Commission, a division of city government. Three bays of a large parking lot by a playground/plaza is set aside for the farmers and artists, and each space is assigned to a season pass holder, and other spaces are given out on day by day basis. The market is pretty quiet until the produce starts up and the farmers show up, then business can be brisk, although sales are down this year.

Santa Idaho Barter Fair: In Santa, Idaho.

From: Sheri Kopel-Hamburg <SOLSTICE@TurboNet.com>, Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998

Meets once a year in spring time. Informal. People show up with stuff and barter or sell it to each other. Only things I've ever seen like it. Can be graage sale-like stuff, or vendor like merchandise. Trade old tools or your artwork, whatever you want. There are several yearly events/flea markets. One of the most popular is the Springtime RV club's rummage sale: open air, run by a coalition of RV persons, and each year they donate all proceeds to a given charity. There are also several black-powder rendezvous-- for those who make traditional arts in leather, cloth, metal, or other materials.

Peace of the Marketplace Shattered in Jerusalem; Market Collects Donations Today

From: Bill Goldsmith, Manager, Saturday Market, Eugene, OR<smarket@efn.org> Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997

Last Wednesday the Mahane Yehuda outdoor marketplace in west Jerusalem was attacked by two Arab suicide bombers. The attack was carried out at noon amid crowds of lunchtime shoppers and killed 15 people and wounded more than 150. While the politics of all of this is complex, the reality is that a sister marketplace has been brutalized. Today, the staff of the Saturday Market is collecting donations to help the Mahane Yehuda marketplace recover. Market members and members of the public can donate at the Information Booth or at the Market Stage any time today.

An example of the connection among marketplaces worldwide can be found this week in Grant Wiegert's letter to the Eugene Weekly from Kenya: Today is market day, just like every Monday and Thursday. Men and women huddle under plastic tarps yelling "customer." ...People milling about deciding what to buy. ... Sort of reminds me of Saturday Market: hordes of people wearing colorful clothes, an abundance of produce and neighbors greeting one another and having a good time. The last marketplace disaster took place three years ago when a single large caliber shell slammed into the open air marketplace in Sarajevo killing 66 people and injuring more than 200. Saturday Market sends its deepest sympathies to the vendors of Mahane Yehuda and its victims.

CEDAR FARMERS' MARKET, Vancouver Island

From: Suzanne Heizer <szheizer@island.net> Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997

We are a grass roots market in a rural area of Vancouver Island near Nanaimo. This is our second season, running from May to October. The community aspect of the market is very important, and we try to maintain the farm produce focus by limiting crafts to one table in four of food or produce. Everything must be home grown, baked or made. We are slowly growing and receive a lot of positive feedback. Ultimately we hope that more people will produce healthy, organic food. We currently average about 20 vendors per week. The market runs every Sunday 10.00 to 1.00 at the Cedar Community Hall. We have shelter when it rains, but generally set up on the grass outside.

Englishtown, NJ and Hometown, PA

From: "The Ficca's" <pficca@sunlink.net> Date: Thu, 10 Jul 1997

There is a wonderful Flea Market in Englishtown, New Jersey (probably the largest in the USA). I'm not sure of the days, but I definitely know it is open every Saturday and I think Sunday, from about 7:00 a.m. until about 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. (I just know every time I've gone there most people were finished shopping by 3:00 p.m.) The parking lot is generally full by 7:00 a.m. It's great.

There is also one in Hometown, Pa.(near Hazelton/Tamaqua area-off of Rte.81). This is only open on Wednesday from early morning to early evening. It's much smaller than Englishtown, but it is still pretty good.

The Royal Oak Farmers Market has just been fully acquired by the city of Royal Oak, Michigan. The Farmers Market Association web page is at <http://www.mirrornews.com/farmersmkt/>.

The city is finalizing the job description for Market Master. It may be either a contract or city employee position. The interim master is Steve Sendek, who held the job some years ago under (now former) County operating authority.

We are looking for places that offer grants to farm produce vending facilities for improvement (the building is 70 years old and in need of a lot of repair after the neglect of the former operators) and promotion/advertising. The market is in a fully-built-up urban setting, not in a farm area, and our farmers drive as many as 80 miles one way to sell. Can you help us?

Spokane MarketPlace, Spokane,WA

From: "chryssalis aristaeus" <bright@famrc.org>, Date: Thu, 6 Feb 1997

Since 1991, The Spokane MarketPlace, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization and a member of the Washington Farmers' Market Association, has been making possible Spokane's only farmers' market. The Spokane MarketPlace is currently in the final stages of negotiations in its efforts to secure a long-term lease on a new location for the market for the 1997 season. The new location is a 30,000 sq. ft. one-story building in a rapidly improving neighborhood in the heart of downtown Spokane. The building comes with an outdoor parking lot of equal size. The building's owner, The Spokesman Review Newspaper, has pledged $100,000 to make improvements to the building prior to occupancy this spring. The Spokane MarketPlace is seeking tax-deductible donations of funds from individuals and corporate donors to make further improvements to the building, construct booths for farmers to use, install plumbing to farmers' booths (to keep produce fresh and wet), install walk-in coolers for farmers to share and construct a certified kitchen for use by farmers to help them enter the value-added market niche.

Haymaker Farm Market, Kent, Ohio

From: Fritz Seefeldt <tabholz@megsinet.net>, Date: Wed, 1 Jan 1997

We are a group of farmers and volunteers who decided it would be a good deal to have an open-air agricultural market in our town. We are located down the street from the Pufferbelly Restaurant (the old Erie Railroad station). We are open from mid July until late October Saturday mornings 9:00 am- 1:00 pm. Presently our market has physical space for about 25-30 vendors with street-front access and diagonal parking along the street in front of the farmers. Pricing is comparable to supermarkets and freshness is guaranteed. We only have vendors who grow the produce themselves, or who purchased from a local grower. Our vendors sell everything from bedding plants and house plants to corn cucumbers and zucchini. We are going to also begin offering locally baked breads at the market.

Ismailovsky Park Market in Moscow

From: Walter Jacques, <walterj@Health.State.OK.US>, Date: Mon, 2 Dec 1996

There's an outstanding market in Moscow in the northeast corner of the city called Ismailovsky Park, which is very close to the Metro station by the same name. The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays only. For the easiest time, bring a Russian friend who can point out some items of interest which you might have otherwise missed and to translate for you in transactions with vendors who speak only Russian.

Take the blue Metro line to the Ismailovsky Park station, go out the exit, and follow the long train of people heading to the left. There are poor street vendors lining the road on the way to the market who cannot pay the vendor rent for the market, but who have excellent (and very interesting) items for sale just the same.

At the market you will find the best prices in the city on matryoshki (nested dolls), Russian traditional clothing, pins amber, linen, wooden spoons and bowls, toys, art, and all things Russian. The combination of sights, smells and sounds is well worth the trip to Moscow all by itself. I highly recommend it.

Be sure to see the religious icons which seem to be always at the top of the stairs in the back, but a word of caution: it's illegal to take the really old icons out of the country.

The Street Market of Magadan, Russian Far East

From: American Bank USA, Dr. Pyotr Joahannevich van de Waal-Palms <russia@aa.net>, Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996

Magadan Russia is located approximately a 1000 miles west of Anchorage. It is a land of permafrost. The street market occupies a parking lot about the size of a basketball court with an adjoining building of the same size. Originally illegal, its stands were nevertheless patronized by the Magadan police and its existence was always very visible with 40-50 automobiles parked on weekends, the equivalent in activity of a super-bowl event in the U.S. Everything is available that you would expect to find in a supermarket, hardware and clothing store although not in the quality and assortment you might wish. Much of the merchandise comes from Japan and China. Its a friendly place whether you speak Russian or not and American are welcome.

Paradise Market Farmer's Market, Paradise, CA

From: Charleen Mansfield <cmansfie@bcoe.butte.k12.ca.us>; Date: Wed., 14 Aug 14 1996

The Paradise Farmer's Market, in Paradise, California, is a wonderful open air farmer's market. It is held every Tuesday 7:30 AM - noon in the parking lot of the CMA church at 6491 Clark Road. It is only open in the summer and has about 15-20 vendors who sell mostly produce. We have quite a few vendors, who sell baby carrots, Blue Lake variety green beans, zucchini, green bell peppers, peaches, some wonderful small round yellow-meated watermelons, tomatoes, garlic, and beautiful berries.

Sometimes, we have fresh flowers and potpourri, sometimes the church members come and sell coffee and muffins. I'm sure that, compared to big cities, this farmer's market is small potatoes (or watermelons or any produce you care to name), but at least it's locally grown, so it's fresh.

Lakewood Market in Atlanta

From: John Burger <john@3csoftware.com>; Date: Tue, 13 Aug 1996 11:36:33 -0400

Without a doubt, my favorite market has to be the Lakewood Market in Atlanta. Taking place the second weekend of each month at the old Lakewood Fairgrounds south of downtown Atlanta, the place is legendary for its bargains -- and just lots of really neat stuff. Most of my house is furnished from there -- I can't get enough of the place .....

Under the best circumstances -- Spring & Fall months -- I'd guess they have close to 1,000 vendors. They sell everything from $1 kinck-nacks to beautiful antique furniture costing thousands of dollars. You name it, you can find it there.... I just picked up a way-cool silverware set from the 40's -- with my own monogram on it by coincidence -- for $1 a piece. Such a deal! The place is one of Atlanta's best.....

Yellow Springs is located just North East of Dayton, Ohio. Its just off of State Route 68 just 10 miles south of I-70 (exit 52A) or 6 miles off of I-675 (Dayton Yellow Springs Road exit)

Every Saturday Morning, 8 AM - 12 PM (ish) during the warmer seasons many of the local farmers bring their fresh vegetables, home made pies, spices, jams, honey, etc. and set up in the parking lot behind King's Yard (next to Weavers Supermarket) in Downtown Yellow Springs (all 2 blocks of it). Try some fresh corn picked that morning, absolutely amazing!. As far as I know, this just happens, I have never heard of or have seen a central coordinator or leader so I have no contact information. See you there.

Chicago area markets

Love your pages and your interests. Funnily enough, Dudley Nieto (Mexican chef) took a small group of us on a walking tour of the Mexican vendors at the Maxwell Street market last fall. Food was great and me who thought she knew a lot about Mexican food discovered whole new worlds. I have a friend coming in from England next month and that's one place I'm taking her for sure. (BTW, Steve Pratr food writer for the Trib wrote a wonderful article on food vendors at the Maxwell Street market). I used to go to the market about 20 years ago with some regularity. I had forgotten how real, how vibrant the market was and how much it brought people together.

If you haven't been to the Evanston market (St. morning from Memorial Day through Halloween) in the industrial park west of Benson and north of Church it one of the older locals and also quite good. Also Madison's is wonderful. And last but not least, The American Institute of Wine and Food along with Ravinia have a market at Ravinnia weekend after Labor Day with vendors representing the Best of the Midwest (the market's title). There are children's cooking classes, top chefs doing cooking demons, entertainment, etc. However, there's a charge for admission.

We operate three locations in Southern CA. All locations are open Fri,Sat & Sun 10:00AM to 6:00PM. They are all indoor operations and the type of merchandise and vendors vary from location to location. Our location in Woodland Hills is in the west San Fernando Valley. It is more upscale with the emphasis on clothing, jewelry and or accessories. We have a large number of craft vendors as well as produce, bread, etc. This location is 100,000 sq ft inside and 10,000 sq ft outside with about 375 vendors. Woodland Hills phone:818/340-9120

Our second location is in the East San Fernando Valley in Panorama City. This is primarily Hispanic and the merchandise is geared towards their needs. This building is 55,000 sq ft with about 250 vendors. Panorama City phone:818/892-0183

Our third location is in the City of Pomona which is the most easterly city in Los Angeles County. This building is 120,000 sq ft and has 420 vendors. This public for this location is primarily Hispanic with a lesser number of Black and Asian. The merchandise is very similar to Panorama City. Pomona phone:909/620-4792

A large number of our vendors were either street vendors or worked the outdoor swap meets and now have come in from the cold or the heat as it were.

North Shore Country Market on the North Shore of O'ahu in the Hawaiian Islands.

From: "Bill L. Howes" <erdman@lava.net>, Date: Tue, 20 Feb 96 05:56:35 -1000.

My favorite open air market is called the North Shore Country Market on the North Shore of O'ahu in the Hawaiian Islands. This market was started my myself and other concerned community residents who were tired of paying high prices for produce at the local supermarket. The north shore is blessed with an abundance of fruit trees however all of them exist on private properties. Our goal with this market was to bring together people who have access to these trees, garden farmers, home crafters, fisherpeople, and any other person in our community willing to fabricate any object of value.

We have been doing this market for nearly two years now. The first market was held in my front yard in Pupukea and has since moved to the local community park. This market is held all year round and is very informal and dependant upon seasonal friuts and the whim of our local market gardeners (garden farmers). We usually have any where from 8 to 15 vendors and we function much like a large family.

The market is held on the first and third saturday of each month. We have just set up a Non-profit corporation to make ourselves legal, and have just recieved a grant from a local foundation to pay for our liability insurance.

One can find our market by going to Sunset Neighborhood Park. This park is located directly across the street from the infamous Banzai Pipeline surfing break officially known as Ehukai Beach Park on the North Shore of O'ahu.

We feel that our market is a prime example of community working together in a positive way to achieve a common goal.

We welcome any thoughts or comments by any group or individual concerning our market.

From: gisland@crocker.com (Green Island Cooperative Library), Date: Mon, 19 Feb 1996 11:05:44 -0500.

The best market I go to (to sell) is the Rietta Ranch Flea Market, in Hubbardston, MA, just outside of Gardner (20 miles north of Worcester, MA). It's in an open field, 300+ vendors, $10/day. It starts early in the am. Opens at 6:00, active until 1:00 1:30. I sell baby clothes there and gross between $200 - $500 weekly. Pretty good for 6 - 7 hours out in the sun.

East Vancouver Farmer's Market, Vancouver BC CANADA

From: 75052.602.@arl-mail-svc-1.compuserve.com, @compuserve.com; Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996

This is just a short note to let you know about the East Vancouver Farmer's Martket, a seasonal farmer's/community market in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which completed a successful first season in 1995. With the support of both local farmers and the community, the Market is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who make up the East Vancouver Farmer's Market Society (EVFMS). Over its first season, our market quickly became a popular place where farmers could come to vend their produce and the community could come to buy fresh vegetables, baked goods and crafts, while meeting both neighbors and farmers. We are now getting ready for our next season, to run from May through to November 1996. Thanks for the work that has gone in to establishing Openair-Market Net, we appreciate all the info and advice we can get from both seasoned market organizers and general fans of cmmunity-based farmer's markets.

I own a very good flea market in Alabama . It has 1400 vendors and it has been in business for 25 years. The vendors sell anything from dogs and chickens to tiffeny lamps. All my vendors are interesting. It is open only on Sunday. We were picked last year one of the top 50 in better home and garden. Thanks for asking.

Westside Market - Cleveland, Ohio

Date: Thu, 11 Jan 96 13:12:09 -0800, From: Sharon Reuder <smreuder@lanmail.rmc.com>, Subject: Openair Market

I was just browsing the internet on my lunch hour and was pleasantly surprised to find this home page. Just one problem ... you left out my favorite open air market. It is called the "West Side Market" located on West 25th St. in Cleveland, OH. Their days of operation are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. They have a wide variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, and meats. They also specialize in freshly baked breads, homemade pastas, homemade cheeses and dairy products. All of the vendors have their own store, or farms, located in other parts of Northeastern Ohio; that is the reason why they are not open every day. The building that houses the meat & cheese vendors is listed as a historical site in Ohio. (That's how long this place has been around.) Please add my favorite market to your list on the net, so it can become someone else's favorite market.
