Send Save Maxwell St. Letters to Keeper of the National Register

The Maxwell Street neighborhood, Chicago's most important Blues landmark, is about to meet the University of Illinois wrecking ball. Help save the birthplace of Chicago Blues and gateway for immigrant groups.

We are trying to get the Maxwell Street Historic District listed on the National Register for Historic Places. We need your help.

Send a message (postal mail or fax preferred) to Carol Shull urging her to place the Maxwell Street Historic District on the National Register.

If easy to do, send or us a copy: Maxwell Street Historic Preservation Coalition, Room 760, Roosevelt University, 430 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605; FAX: 312-341-3762; Email <mar@openair.org>; PH: 312-341-3696

On June 9, 2000 the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council voted unanimously (11 to 0) to put the District on the National Register but the politically controlled Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is holding up the nomination to allow the University of Illinois to tear down more buildings.
