As a blues fan/radio producer/writer-researcher for 25 years, and as the grandson of Eastern European immigrants, I urge you to preserve the Maxwell Street market site for its historic significance both in the blues field and in the field of American immigrant history. The blues is one of African-America's (and America's in general) great contributions to 20th century art. Locales like Maxwell Street were critical in forging the pluralistic melting pot that has made America such a vibrant and diverse nation. Moreover, knowing what historical preservation -- including historical preservation centered around music -- has done for the local economies of cities all around the country, I am sure that Maxwell Street can be developed into a viable tourist destination as well as a historic site. Please don't be shortsighted about this --

Sincerely,

Steve Hoffman, Takoma Park MD
