From Congressman Bobby L. Rush, 1st Congressional District, Chicago

Bobby L. Rush <fax#202-226-0333> Date: Wed, 26 Mar 1997

Dear Chancellor Broski:

I am writing on behalf of the residents and merchants of Maxwell Street. Maxwell Street has been a social, cultural, economic and political center for much of the City of Chicago's existence. Maxwell Street has provided the residents of Chicago with an invaluable sense of history, as well as entertainment, a shopping mecca and meeting place.

Maxwell Street is a treasure we must preserve for all generations - past, present and future. The University of Illinois should play a key role in preserving Maxwell Street and the history it represents. Therefore, I urge you to aid in the creation of the Maxwell Street Preservation District. It is possible for the University of Illinois to have the capital improvements it needs as well as preserve history. I believe the University, as an institution of higher learning, has a duty to preserve the history and culture of Maxwell Street.

The Maxwell Street Preservation District could be a wellspring of cultural expression, a rich tourist attraction and a source of educational opportunity. The District would be an asset to the academic community of the University of Illinois.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Bobby L. Rush

Member of Congress
