I am a child of Chicago (Mercy Hospital, 1947). Although I have traveled far and wide as a contract federal civil rights investigator and more recently as an anthropologist/archaeologist, Chicago is never far from my thoughts and is always an integral part of who I am.

The diversity that is Chicago is embodied, in part, in the Maxwell Street area. I am not only a better anthropologist, but I am also a better man because of this diversity and my experience with it. The University of Illinois can only be enhanced by its support of a Maxwell Street Historic Preservation District. It is appropriate for the University to be actively involved in the commercial redevelopment of the Maxwell Street area. It is equally appropriate for the University to actively preserve the cultural history of the area. Such revitalization and preservation can work in concert to bring people to the area from all corners of the world. The city, the neighborhood and the visitors will all be enriched by the University's farsightedness. Thank you.

Sincerely,

John W. Wolf
