Dear Chancellor Broski:

I am writing to encourage you to incorporate the old Maxwell Street Market area as a Maxwell Historic Preservation District in the University of Illinois's plans for commercial redevelopment of this area.

This would be consistent with the role of the University of Illinois at Chicago in promoting the preservation of urban traditions through your Great Cities Initiative.

Also, I was present at the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Conference, November 9, 1996, to promote the New Maxwell Street Market as an opportunity for student entrepreneurs to try out new product ideas. This prestigious event sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies expressed the university's commitment to entrepreneurship training.

I am Manager of the New Maxwell Street Market entrepreneurship training project sponsored by the Uptown Peoples Development Corporation and the Prologue Learning Center.

Over 50 high school, adult education and Truman College students have participated in utilizing the nonprofit space donated by the City of Chicago for entrepreneurship training purposes. See the enclosed press packet for the New Maxwell Street Market Project News Conference, November 10, 1996.

I can think of no better way to publicize the University of Illinois at Chicago's commitment to preserving the urban tradition of assimilating diverse immigrant populations through commercial activity than by establishing the Maxwell Street Historic Preservation District. Thousands of visitors each year would be introduced to a university that cares about its neighbors.

Sincerely yours,

Bob Koth, Manager, New Maxwell Street Project, Uptown Peoples Development Corporation
