I am writing to request that you incorporate the remaining block and a half of Maxwell Street Historic Preservation District into the University of Illinois's plans for commercial redevelopment of the Maxwell Street area by NOT destroying this area.

Maxwell Street, which has a rich and varied history, should be set aside as a Historic Preservation District on the themes of immigrant enterprise, micro-enterprise, Blues history, and Jewish and Mexican-American History. Please don't tear down these precious buildings.

In Alex Count's recent book on the Grameen Bank: Give Us Credit (Random House,1996) it is clear that this is an excellent example of a micro-credit commercial area. This area should be honored, not destroyed.

Thank you.
