Maxwell Street

The fight to save what is left of this Chicago market street, threatened with destruction from the (Philistine) University of Illinois(UIC) who own the site and wants to expand their campus, continues. The Maxwell Street Historic Preservation Coalition are trying to stop this and save the old buildings in order to create a Maxwell Street National Historic Blues District. Paul Baldwin, the UK representative of the coalition can be contacted at Forge Cottage, Easby, Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, TS9 6JQ. Readers are urged to send their messages of support. Those with the facilities can e-mail UIC Chancellor David.C.Broski@uic.edu telling him why blues preservation is important and asking him not to destroy this culturally important landmark, as well as checking the web site: http://www.openair.org/maxwell/preserve.html or e-mailing Paul at info@nowmedia.co.uk. The soundtrack from the 1964 film And This Is Maxwell Street is due to be issued on a 3CD set.
