Chancellor Broski:

Let me add my voice to those requesting that a Maxwell Street Historic Preservation District be incorporated into the University of Illinois' plans for commercial redevelopment of the Maxwell Street area.

The university has a unique opportunity to use its power to put an exclamation point on a place important both to African-American culture and to our national musical heritage.

I hope that you and the university recognize the importance of this area to innumerable people far beyond the city of Chicago and act accordingly.
