CITY'S BULLY TACTICS DRIVE CONFRONTATION

Despite the City's snarl that 'everything is debris', members of the Maxworks Coop, an Environmental and Social Justice organization, will not stand aside today if the City attempts to throw away their library. The City has threatened to empty the building under the guise of a Court order to remove 'junk, debris, and materials deemed hazardous or a nuisance.'

Lionel Trepanier, who unsuccessfully sought a restraining order against the City last Friday, believes that the Sanitation and Building Departments are cynically carrying out a policy to clear the Maxwell buildings and land for another University parking lot. "It is shocking what the City will do to carry out the policy. The City lied to get this case into court, they lie about the condition of the property, and attempt to justify it all by calling us names. Just persons can not allow this, a modern day book burning." The City beat the TRO (temporary restraining order) not by proving the books were debris, but by arguing they could pay us if they destroyed good books, and thus the injury would not be irreperable. This is unacceptable. We don't want to be paid off. Our library is not debris, not one book will leave without protest.

717 West Maxwell has been legally occupied by the Maxworks Coop since 1984, and houses a several thousand volume Green library of current and historic environmental and social justice concerns. For this library to be destroyed is an unacceptable atrocity, and must not be permitted. Join other book lovers to oppose this threatened City action today, Monday, September 20, 1999 at 8:30 am, 717 W. Maxwell Street. This is an event not to be missed!!
