Tours of Historic Old Maxwell Street during 2000


These tours are sponsored by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The CAF is dedicated to advancing public interest and education in architecture and design. Their motto is "the city is our museum." CAF pursues this mission through a comprehensive program of tours, exhibitions, lectures, and special events, all designed to enhance the public's awareness and appreciation of Chicago's outstanding architectural legacy.


Explore the historic Maxwell Street neighborhood which served as Chicago's open-air street market from 1912 to 1994. Learn about the mixed-use, commercial, and religious buildings within this pre-Chicago Fire neighborhood that housed the city's earliest immigrants and nurtured some of its most successful merchants and entrepreneurs.

Meet: Southwest corner of Roosevelt Road (1200 S) and Newberry Ave (822 W) across from St. Francis of Assisi Church. Newberry Street is one block west of Halsted Street.

To participate in a tour, simply arrive at the meeting place indicated on the date shown. Reservations are not required.

The cost is $5. For members of the Chicago Architecture Foundation, the tour is free.

The tours are given by architectural historian Lori Grove <lgrove@fmnh.org>, who has been doing research for over seven years on the Maxwell Street neighborhood.
