This film, by documentary film maker Mike Shea, was influenced by the legendary guitarist Michael Bloomfield (later of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band) who encouraged Shea to make the blues musicians of Maxwell Street an important part of his film. "And This is Free" pioneered the techniques of cinema verité and remote sound recording in the United States. Howard Alk (of Second City fame) edited the film.

We know who we are by the objects we possess. We have come across many hours of film/video on Maxwell Street and thousands of photographs. Context is important. They must be preserved and displayed -- not in a sterile place but right on Maxwell Street in its buildings, converted to museum standards.
