Maxwell Street Landmark Letter from:

Vincent L. Michael, Chicago Programs Director, Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois

1 December 1993

TO: Ann V. Swallow, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, Old State Capitol, Springfield, Illinois 62701

Dear Ann:

As you know, a nomination form to the National Register of Historic Places for the Maxwell Street Market is being prepared by Lori Grove. LPCI has long held that the Market has great historical significance to the city of Chicago, State of Illinois and the nation. The list of significant individuals and organizations that have grown out of the market is extraordinary. It is a place that links Chicago to significant elements of its history and culture.

We support the nomination of the Maxwell Street Market under Criterion A, which appropriately recognizes the market's significant historic associations. This opinion has been confirmed by our Chicago Programs Committee. While we have not seen the final nomination form, we support the efforts of Lori Grove and community organizations to nominate the Market under Criterion A.

We hope you will share our support with the members of the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council.

Sincerely,

Vincent L. Michael

Chicago Programs Director
