A letter to U. of Illinois President James Stukel from State Representative Judy Erwin, Vice Chairman of Illinois House of Representatives Tourism Committee

(This was sent to his office at the main campus in Urbana, Illinois 61801)

June 30, 1999

Dear President Stukel:

I am writing to urge your support for a Maxwell Historic Preservation District.

As Vice Chair of the House Tourism Committee, I believe this is a unique opportunity to preserve a significant center of Chicago's history as well as create a historic district that will become a rich tourist attraction.

Maxwell Street represents a gateway for many minority communities in Chicago. This part of Chicago is a rich blues and jazz center, known around the world. By preserving this area, future generations will be able to appreciate the contributions immigrant communities made to Chicago and to blues music.

I urge your support for the preservation of Maxwell Street. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this issue.

Sincerely,

Judy Erwin <judy.erwin@nidus.com>

State Representative
