Session to be taught by David O'Neil, former manager of the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia and director of the 1996 International Public Market Conference with Steve Davies, Vice President of Project for Public Spaces/Public Market Collaborative. The course is geared to community development organizations and others who want to start or improve a public market.


Course description: Large cities and small towns are rediscovering the social and economic benefits of public markets. Learn how to start or strengthen a market in your own neighborhood or town. With emphasis on strategies for creating markets in disinvested and low income areas, the course covers goal setting, business planning, economic feasibility analysis, organizational capacity to develop and manage a market, site selection, vendor recruitment and retention, and design. Includes a site visit to several local markets.
